To Art House welcomes Rex Chan to our Residency Programme. During his residency, the artist utilises the studio space as a site for the making of large-scale oil paintings, a format he has not previously explored. This new body of work will be presented in a solo exhibition, scheduled to open in autumn 2025.

陳漢標 Rex CHAN
b. 1958 in Hong Kong
Chan’s multidisciplinary practice encompasses oil painting, collage, drawing, ink painting, and seal carving. In his oil paintings, his approach is guided by instinctive rhythm and a tactile engagement with materials, through which gesture becomes a conduit for corporeal expression. Line serves as a central element in his compositions, evoking rhizomatic structures and echoing the strokes of ancient Chinese seal script. His restrained use of color accentuates the gestural quality of each mark, while references to mythic creatures from The Classic of Mountains and Seas introduce layers of cultural semiotics and symbolic resonance.
