Racism and discrimination are inseparable from the experience of human displacement. Tsang Kin-Wah employs his distinctive text-based patterns in his artwork Either / O̶r̶ to subtly convey the violence and injustice associated with anti-Asian sentiments in the history of Canada. This piece was originally commissioned by the Vancouver Art Gallery in 2017. The texts used in the artwork were extracted from commentaries found in online forums discussing topics that often evoke racist sentiments, particularly in relation to the increased immigration of Hong Kong residents to Vancouver during the 1980s and 1990s, coinciding with the expiration of Britain's lease on Hong Kong.

Hong Kong, once a refuge for many, has experienced its own population displacement triggered by socio-political and ideological disquiet since the 1980s. Through its presentation, Either / O̶r̶ reveals a portal that explores the intricate relationship between refugees and refuge within the context of human displacement in Asia.
